Isoproterenol (also known as isoprenaline) is a synthetic non-selective beta adrenergic agonist and catecholamine. It acts primarily by stimulating beta1 and beta2 adrenergic receptors, leading to increased heart rate, enhanced cardiac contractility, and bronchodilation. Its main clinical uses include the treatment of bradycardia, heart block, Adams-Stokes syndrome, bronchospasm during anesthesia, acute asthma attacks, certain types of cardiac arrhythmias, acute exacerbations of COPD, and shock. Isoproterenol was developed in the mid-twentieth century as a sympathomimetic agent structurally related to epinephrine but with greater selectivity for beta receptors[1][2][3][8][10].
