Overview

Isoquercetin is a naturally occurring flavonoid glycoside (specifically, quercetin-3-O-glucoside) found in many medicinal herbs, fruits, and vegetables[8]. It is more bioavailable than its aglycone form (quercetin), due to its glucose moiety which facilitates rapid absorption via sodium-dependent glucose transporter 1 (SGLT-1) in the small intestine[5][3]. Isoquercetin exhibits potent antioxidant activity by scavenging free radicals and inhibiting oxidative damage to cells[4][5]. It also demonstrates anti-inflammatory effects and has been studied for potential benefits in cardiovascular disease, diabetes (as an α-glucosidase inhibitor improving glucose tolerance), allergies, neurological conditions, and cancer[5][8]. Mechanistically, it inhibits protein disulfide isomerase (PDI), contributing to anticoagulant effects relevant for thromboembolism prevention in cancer patients[3]. In preclinical studies on pancreatic cancer cells, isoquercetin induces apoptosis through activation of caspases and cell cycle arrest at the G1 phase[6].
