Overview

Isoquinoline alkaloid derivative (specifically identified by USPTO Patent US 9,707,222 B2) is a small molecule activator of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) being developed by Zih Yuan Tang (ZIH) for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. These derivatives are designed to mimic or enhance the metabolic benefits of natural isoquinoline alkaloids, such as berberine, by stimulating the AMPK pathway. Activation of AMPK is a key therapeutic strategy for metabolic disorders as it promotes glucose uptake in peripheral tissues, inhibits hepatic gluconeogenesis, and enhances lipid oxidation, thereby improving insulin sensitivity and lowering blood glucose levels. The compound is currently in early-stage development within ZIH's pipeline.
