Overview

Isotonic fluid, in the context of the Renal Anhydramnios Fetal Therapy (RAFT) trial, refers to a warmed sterile solution (such as Ringer's Lactate or normal saline) supplemented with balanced electrolytes and antibiotics. Developed by Johns Hopkins University in collaboration with the North American Fetal Therapy Network (NAFTNet), this therapeutic intervention is administered via serial percutaneous amnioinfusions to pregnant women whose fetuses suffer from early pregnancy renal anhydramnios (EPRA). The primary mechanism is the physical restoration of amniotic fluid volume, which is essential for fetal lung expansion and development, thereby aiming to prevent lethal pulmonary hypoplasia. The RAFT trial is a multicenter Phase 1 study evaluating the safety and efficacy of this procedure, with a primary endpoint of neonatal survival to successful dialysis.
