This is an investigational combination therapy consisting of aerosolized 13-cis retinoic acid (isotretinoin) and intramuscular cholecalciferol (vitamin D), developed by Kafrelsheikh University. It is specifically designed to treat post-COVID-19 anosmia (loss of smell). The rationale is that SARS-CoV-2 binds to STRA6 receptors, leading to retinol depletion and retinoic acid insufficiency, which prevents the regeneration of olfactory sensory neurons. The treatment aims to upregulate ACE2 and STRA6 receptors and promote the regeneration of olfactory receptors and neurons. It is currently being evaluated in a Phase 4 clinical trial in Egypt.
