Isovanillin is a **phenolic aldehyde** and organic compound structurally related to vanillin. It is a selective **inhibitor of aldehyde oxidase** and is not a substrate for this enzyme[1][2][7]. Isovanillin is metabolized by **aldehyde dehydrogenase** to form isovanillic acid[1][2]. It has shown potential as an antidiarrhoeal and antispasmodic agent in animal studies, apparently by reducing gastrointestinal motility, though its precise mechanism in the GI tract is not fully determined[3][7]. Isovanillin is also a precursor in the chemical synthesis of morphine and other compounds such as combretastatin A-4[2][7]. Other reported bioactivities include antifungal, antioxidant, and free-radical scavenging effects[7][9]. There is no evidence of commercial development as a human pharmaceutical; research has explored its use in alcohol aversion therapy and as an antidiarrhoeal drug[1][2][3][7].
