Overview

Isprelor is a synthetic prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) analog developed by Alliance Pharma as a 25 mcg vaginal tablet specifically for the induction of labor and cervical ripening. It acts as an agonist at prostaglandin E receptors, primarily the EP2, EP3, and EP4 subtypes, which are expressed in the uterine smooth muscle and cervical tissue. Stimulation of these receptors promotes uterine contractions and the enzymatic degradation of collagen in the cervix, facilitating the initiation of labor. While misoprostol is widely used off-label for obstetric indications, Isprelor was designed to provide a standardized, low-dose pharmaceutical formulation for this purpose. Despite successful Phase III clinical trials comparing it to dinoprostone, the product was not commercially launched, and Alliance Pharma subsequently recorded impairment charges for the asset, leading to the discontinuation of its development.
