Overview

Isradipine is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker used primarily to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It works by inhibiting the influx of calcium ions through L-type calcium channels in cardiac and arterial smooth muscle cells, leading to relaxation of blood vessels (vasodilation), reduced systemic vascular resistance, and decreased workload on the heart. Isradipine exhibits greater selectivity for arterial smooth muscle compared to cardiac tissue. It has also been investigated for neuroprotective effects in Parkinson’s disease but failed to show efficacy in phase 3 clinical trials. Isradipine is available as an oral capsule and may be used alone or with other antihypertensive agents such as diuretics.
