ITF2984 is a synthetic peptide and novel somatostatin receptor ligand (SRL) developed as a pan-somatostatin receptor agonist with high affinity and full agonist activity at somatostatin receptor 3 (SSTR3). It induces SSTR3 activation, leading to antimitotic and proapoptotic effects in tumor cells. Preclinical studies have shown that ITF2984 reduces cell proliferation and increases apoptosis in non-functioning pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (NF-PitNETs) and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (Pan-NETs), particularly those expressing high levels of SSTR3. In comparative studies, it demonstrated efficacy similar to or greater than pasireotide in inhibiting tumor cell growth and hormone secretion. The drug has been evaluated in phase 1 trials for safety/pharmacokinetics in healthy volunteers and phase 2 trials for acromegaly. It is developed by Italfarmaco.
