Overview

This investigational intervention consists of intravenous (IV) amino acid supplementation administered as a continuous infusion, currently being evaluated in the Phase 2 NEXIS (Nutrition and Exercise in Critical Illness) trial. Coordinated by the Clinical Evaluation Research Unit (CERU) at Kingston General Hospital, the therapy is designed for critically ill patients with acute respiratory failure who require mechanical ventilation. The primary objective is to mitigate intensive care unit (ICU)-acquired weakness and muscle wasting by providing high-dose protein (targeting 2.0-2.5 g/kg/day) to stimulate protein synthesis and improve amino acid metabolism. In the NEXIS protocol, this nutritional support is uniquely combined with in-bed cycle ergometry exercise to synergistically enhance physical functioning, body composition, and long-term recovery outcomes.
