IV lamotrigine

IV lamotrigine is an intravenous formulation of the established antiepileptic drug lamotrigine, developed by cuRx health (also known as CURx Pharmaceuticals) using Ligand Pharmaceuticals' Captisol technology. Captisol is a chemically modified cyclodextrin used to enhance the solubility and stability of lamotrigine, enabling its delivery via intravenous injection. This formulation is primarily intended as a bridging therapy for patients with epilepsy or bipolar disorder who are temporarily unable to take oral medications, such as those in a hospital setting or undergoing surgery. Lamotrigine's primary mechanism of action involves the inhibition of voltage-gated sodium channels, which stabilizes neuronal membranes and suppresses the release of excitatory neurotransmitters like glutamate. The drug is being developed through the 505(b)(2) regulatory pathway and has completed a Phase 1 clinical study.
