Iva angustifolia pollen extract is a biological allergenic product used for the diagnosis and treatment of type I hypersensitivity to narrowleaf marsh elder pollen. As a diagnostic agent, it is utilized in skin prick testing to identify specific sensitization in patients with suspected allergic rhinitis or asthma. As a therapeutic, it is employed in allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT), typically administered via subcutaneous injection. The mechanism of action involves inducing immunological tolerance by shifting the immune response from a Th2-mediated allergic profile to a Th1 and regulatory T-cell (Treg) dominated response. This process leads to the production of allergen-specific IgG4 blocking antibodies and a reduction in the activation of mast cells and basophils upon subsequent allergen exposure.
