Overview

Iva axillaris pollen extract is a biological product derived from the pollen of the povertyweed plant, a perennial herb in the Asteraceae family native to western North America. It is utilized as an allergenic extract for the diagnosis and treatment of Type I hypersensitivity reactions (allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis) triggered by povertyweed pollen exposure. For diagnostic purposes, it is used in percutaneous or intradermal skin testing to identify sensitization. Therapeutically, it is administered via subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT), where gradually increasing doses of the allergen are injected to induce immunological tolerance. The mechanism involves a shift in the immune response from a Th2-dominated allergic profile to a Th1 and T-regulatory (Treg) cell-mediated response, leading to the production of allergen-specific IgG4 blocking antibodies and a reduction in the recruitment and activation of mast cells and eosinophils.
