iVeena (IVMED-80) is an investigational, first-in-class, topical pharmacologic treatment for keratoconus, a progressive eye disease characterized by corneal thinning and ectasia. Originally developed by iVeena Delivery Systems and subsequently licensed by Glaukos, the drug is a bio-activated pharmaceutical formulation containing copper sulfate. Its mechanism of action involves the upregulation of endogenous lysyl oxidase (LOX) activity, a copper-dependent enzyme that facilitates the natural cross-linking of collagen and elastin fibers within the corneal stroma. By enhancing LOX-mediated cross-linking, iVeena aims to increase the biomechanical stability of the cornea and prevent disease progression without the need for surgical intervention or ultraviolet light exposure. It is currently in Phase 2 clinical development as a twice-daily topical ophthalmic solution.
