Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ivy Leaves Cough Liquid is a herbal medicinal product containing dry extract of ivy leaves (Hedera helix L.). It is primarily used to relieve productive (chesty) coughs associated with upper respiratory tract infections and bronchitis. The active components—mainly saponins, flavonoids, and phenolic acids—exert expectorant effects by loosening mucus and phlegm in the airways. This facilitates mucociliary clearance and helps reduce the frequency and severity of coughing episodes. Additionally, ivy leaf extract has bronchodilator properties (widening the bronchi), anti-inflammatory effects (linked to inhibition of nuclear factor κ-light-chain-enhancer of activated B-cells activity), antispasmodic action on airway smooth muscle, and may stimulate bronchial gland secretion[1][3][5][8][9][10]. Clinical studies have shown that it can significantly improve symptoms within days compared to placebo or standard care[1]. It is available over-the-counter in various countries as a syrup for oral administration.
