Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ivylin is an over-the-counter (OTC) herbal cough syrup containing dried ivy leaf extract (*Hedera helix*). It is used to relieve acute and chronic coughs, reduce respiratory tract inflammation, and soothe throat irritation. The active components of the extract, primarily triterpene saponins such as hederacoside C and its active metabolite alpha-hederin, exert secretolytic, mucolytic, and bronchospasmolytic effects. Alpha-hederin enhances beta-2 adrenergic receptor responsiveness by inhibiting receptor internalization, leading to bronchodilation and reduced mucus viscosity. Ivylin is marketed as a natural, non-drowsy, alcohol-free, and sugar-free formulation suitable for both adults and children.
