IW-3718 is a gastric-retentive formulation of colesevelam, a bile acid sequestrant. It was designed to maintain the bile-acid sequestrant in the stomach over an extended period of time where it could intercept bile before it reached the esophagus. The drug was developed for the treatment of refractory gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in patients who continued to experience symptoms such as heartburn and regurgitation despite receiving proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy.
