IxCell is a therapeutic biological product consisting of the supernatant, or conditioned medium, harvested from human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs). Developed by IxCell Biotechnology, this cell-free therapy utilizes the MSC secretome, which contains a diverse array of bioactive molecules including exosomes, microRNAs, cytokines, and growth factors. The drug is designed to leverage the paracrine effects of stem cells to modulate the immune system and promote tissue repair without the risks associated with live cell transplantation, such as immune rejection or vascular embolism. IxCell has been primarily investigated for its potential to treat severe inflammatory lung conditions, specifically COVID-19-induced pneumonia and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), where it aims to suppress the cytokine storm and reduce alveolar damage through nebulized inhalation.
