Overview

IxCell hUC-MSC-O is an allogeneic, human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cell (hUC-MSC) therapy developed by **Shanghai IxCell Biotechnology** for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. This "off-the-shelf" cellular product is administered via intra-articular injection to modulate the joint's immune microenvironment and promote tissue regeneration. The therapy functions primarily through paracrine signaling, where the injected cells secrete a suite of bioactive molecules including Transforming Growth Factor-beta (TGF-beta), Interleukin-10 (IL-10), Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), and Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF). These factors exert potent anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects by inhibiting T-cell proliferation and M1 macrophage activation while simultaneously stimulating chondrocyte survival and cartilage matrix deposition. Currently in Phase 3 clinical development in China (NCT06716281), IxCell hUC-MSC-O is targeted at patients with moderate-to-severe (Kellgren-Lawrence grade II-III) primary knee osteoarthritis who have failed conventional therapies.
