J1P3 is a lytic bacteriophage specifically targeting *Staphylococcus aureus*. It is utilized as a therapeutic agent in bacteriophage therapy, often as part of a cocktail (such as with phage BP13), to treat complex bacterial infections. J1P3 works by recognizing and binding to specific receptors on the surface of *S. aureus* cells, injecting its viral genome, and hijacking the host's cellular machinery to produce new phage particles. This process culminates in the lysis and destruction of the bacterial cell, releasing progeny phages to infect adjacent bacteria. This modality is particularly valuable for treating biofilm-associated infections, such as prosthetic joint infections, where bacteria are often protected from conventional antibiotics.
