Drug intelligence / Profile preview
JA-005 is a monoclonal antibody developed by Just-Evotec Biologics, a subsidiary of Evotec, as a biosimilar candidate for canakinumab (marketed under the brand name Ilaris). It is engineered to target and neutralize interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), a potent pro-inflammatory cytokine that plays a central role in the pathogenesis of various autoinflammatory diseases, including gouty arthritis and periodic fever syndromes. By binding specifically to IL-1β, JA-005 prevents the cytokine from interacting with its cell-surface receptors, thereby blocking the activation of inflammatory signaling cascades and the production of further inflammatory mediators. The candidate is being developed using Just-Evotec's proprietary J.DESIGN platform, which aims to optimize manufacturing efficiency and reduce costs for complex biologics. JA-005 is currently in Phase 1 clinical development, primarily focused on demonstrating pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic biosimilarity to the reference product.
