Overview

Japanese cedar pollen refers to the allergenic pollen grains produced by the Japanese cedar tree Cryptomeria japonica, which are a major cause of seasonal allergic rhinitis (“Japanese cedar pollinosis”) in Japan and other regions where the tree is cultivated. Extracts of Japanese cedar pollen, standardized by content of major allergens such as Cry j 1 and Cry j 2, are used as active pharmaceutical ingredients in allergen‑specific immunotherapy, particularly sublingual immunotherapy tablets that expose the oral mucosa to controlled doses of allergen over time to induce immune tolerance, shift T‑cell responses away from pathogenic Th2/Tpath2 cells, and expand regulatory T cells, thereby reducing IgE‑mediated hypersensitivity and alleviating nasal and ocular symptoms during pollen seasons.
