Overview
Japanese encephalitis vaccine is a biologic vaccine that protects against Japanese encephalitis, a mosquito-borne viral infection prevalent in Asia and parts of the Western Pacific. The vaccines are more than 90% effective and are available in both inactivated (e.g., Ixiaro, JEspect) and live attenuated (e.g., Imojev, SA 14-14-2) forms. The primary mechanism of action is to induce an immune response that generates neutralizing antibodies against the Japanese encephalitis virus. Vaccination is recommended for travelers to endemic areas, residents of those regions, and laboratory workers at risk for exposure. The vaccines are administered as a two-dose series (for most formulations), with booster doses recommended for ongoing risk[1][4][5].
