Overview

Japanese encephalitis vaccine (inactivated, adsorbed) is a sterile suspension of purified, formaldehyde-inactivated Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) of the SA14-14-2 strain. Developed by Valneva (formerly Intercell) and supported in clinical development by institutions such as HUS-Yhtymae, it is produced in Vero cells and adsorbed onto aluminum hydroxide to enhance immunogenicity. The vaccine is indicated for the active immunization against Japanese encephalitis in adults and children, particularly for travelers to endemic regions in Asia or residents of those areas. It is administered via intramuscular injection and typically requires a two-dose primary series to achieve protective levels of neutralizing antibodies. The vaccine is designed to induce high titers of neutralizing antibodies against the JEV envelope protein, which is critical for preventing viral entry into host cells.
