Japanese encephalitis vaccine SA 14-14-2 is a live attenuated viral vaccine developed to prevent Japanese encephalitis, a mosquito-borne flavivirus infection that can cause severe neurological disease. The vaccine is derived from the wild-type JEV SA 14 strain and has been neuroattenuated through multiple passages and genetic modifications, resulting in reduced neurovirulence while retaining immunogenicity. It induces protective immunity by stimulating the host immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies against the Japanese encephalitis virus envelope proteins. The primary indication is for prevention of Japanese encephalitis in children and adults living in or traveling to endemic regions. The vaccine has demonstrated high efficacy (80–99% after one dose; ≥98% after two doses) and an excellent safety profile with mostly mild local or systemic reactions[1][3][6]. It was first licensed in China in 1989 and is now widely used across Asia.
