Overview

JE-VAX is an inactivated Japanese Encephalitis Virus Vaccine prepared from the Nakayama-NIH strain of Japanese encephalitis virus. The vaccine is produced by inoculating mice intracerebrally with the virus, followed by harvesting, formaldehyde inactivation, and purification. It is supplied as a sterile lyophilized powder for subcutaneous injection. The primary indication is prevention of Japanese encephalitis, a mosquito-borne viral infection that can cause severe neurological disease. The mechanism of action involves induction of neutralizing antibodies against the envelope protein of the Japanese encephalitis virus, conferring immunity to infection[1][2][8]. Developed and manufactured by The Research Foundation for Microbial Diseases of Osaka University ("BIKEN"), it was previously widely used but has been discontinued or replaced in many countries due to newer vaccines with improved safety profiles.
