Overview

Jasmine is an autologous cell therapy developed by Japan Tissue Engineering (J-TEC) for the treatment of non-surgical treatment-refractory vitiligo. The product consists of a cultured epidermis sheet that contains both melanocytes (pigment-producing cells) and keratinocytes, derived from the patient's own skin. The therapy involves harvesting a small sample of healthy skin from the patient, culturing the cells to create an epidermal graft, and then transplanting this graft onto vitiligo lesions that have failed to respond to standard treatments such as topical steroids or phototherapy. By introducing functional melanocytes back into the depigmented areas, Jasmine aims to restore natural skin pigmentation. It was approved in Japan in 2024 as a regenerative medicine product, representing the first such approval for vitiligo in the country.
