Overview

Jatropha gossypifolia extract is a complex botanical preparation derived from various parts (leaves, roots, stem, seeds, latex) of the Jatropha gossypifolia plant, belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family. It has a long history in traditional medicine for applications ranging from anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial to antineoplastic and antifertility uses. The extract is rich in bioactive compounds such as phenolic acids (gallic acid, caffeic acid, ferulic acid, etc.), flavonoids (catechin, quercetin, luteolin, apigenin, kaempferol), triterpenes (α-amyrin, β-amyrin, lupeol), alkaloids, tannins, saponins, and coumarins[1][2][4][6]. Mechanistically, some of its activities are attributed to inhibition of signaling enzymes (possible MAPK, JAK/STAT), direct effects on beta-adrenergic receptors, antioxidant effects (scavenging reactive oxygen species), inhibition of acetylcholinesterase/butyrylcholinesterase, inhibition of snake venom enzymes (metalloproteinases, serine proteinases), cytotoxicity against tumor cell lines (via G2/M cell cycle arrest, apoptosis), and hormonal modulation (estrogenic/anti-implantation activities)[1][2][3][5]. Extracts are most commonly administered orally or topically in traditional contexts, but the safety profile requires caution due to reported toxicity (notably in seeds and latex)[1][4].
