JEVAX is an inactivated, mouse brain-derived Japanese encephalitis vaccine developed by the Company for Vaccine and Biological Production No.1 (VABIOTECH) in collaboration with the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE) in Vietnam. Utilizing the Nakayama strain of the Japanese encephalitis virus, the vaccine was developed with technology transfer from Japan and the World Health Organization (WHO) starting in 1989. It was officially integrated into Vietnam's national Extended Program of Immunizations (EPI) in 1997. JEVAX is administered subcutaneously, typically in a three-dose regimen for children aged 1 to 5 years, and has served as a standard control in clinical trials for newer generation Vero cell-derived Japanese encephalitis vaccines.
