JHP-Rödler

JHP-Rödler is an over-the-counter herbal medicinal product consisting of highly concentrated essential oil of Japanese mint (Mentha arvensis var. piperascens), a menthol-rich peppermint-type oil used for gastrointestinal and respiratory complaints as well as topical analgesia.[1][3][5] The oil exhibits antispasmodic effects on smooth muscle, carminative activity, decongestant effects on mucous membranes, mild antimicrobial action, and local analgesic and cooling effects via menthol-mediated activation of cold receptors and functional blockade of pain receptors in the skin and airways.[3][5] Clinically, it is used internally for indigestion, flatulence, a feeling of fullness, and functional stomach, intestinal and biliary complaints, and for colds with cough, hoarseness and catarrh of the upper respiratory tract; externally it is applied for headaches and muscle pain, and by inhalation to ease respiratory tract infections with viscous mucus and nasal congestion.[1][3][5][7][11] The product is marketed in Germany and Switzerland as a liquid oil for oral, topical, and inhalational use and is regulated as an OTC pharmaceutical-grade peppermint/mint oil preparation rather than as a simple cosmetic essential oil.[1][2][3][5][7]
