JHW 007 is an experimental small molecule, specifically a benztropine analogue, developed as a high affinity, atypical dopamine reuptake inhibitor. Unlike cocaine and other typical dopamine transporter (DAT) inhibitors, JHW 007 binds to DAT in an occluded (closed) conformation, resulting in a gradual and sustained increase in extracellular dopamine and lower peak dopamine levels. Preclinical studies demonstrate that JHW 007 reduces or blocks the rewarding, locomotor, and sensitizing effects of cocaine and amphetamine without producing those effects itself, indicating low abuse liability. It is being researched primarily as a potential pharmacotherapy for stimulant (cocaine) addiction, based on its ability to attenuate key behavioral correlates of stimulant exposure in animal models[1][3][7][9][10].
