Jiangtangtiaogan is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula developed by researchers at Zhongda Hospital, Southeast University, for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Based on the TCM theory of "treating diabetes from the liver," the formula aims to harmonize liver function to regulate systemic glucose and lipid metabolism. It has been shown to improve insulin resistance, reduce hepatic steatosis, and alleviate systemic inflammation. Mechanistically, Jiangtangtiaogan modulates the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway in the liver and skeletal muscle and influences the gut microbiota-bile acid axis to improve metabolic homeostasis. It is typically administered as an oral decoction or in granule form.
