Overview
Jiangzhi Granules (JZG) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) compound formula developed by Longhua Hospital, affiliated with the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, specifically for the treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The formulation is a complex mixture of several herbal extracts, typically including *Gynostemma pentaphyllum*, *Salvia miltiorrhiza*, *Crataegus pinnatifida* (Hawthorn), *Alisma plantago-aquatica*, and *Polygonum cuspidatum*. Jiangzhi Granules functions by regulating lipid metabolism, improving insulin sensitivity, and exerting anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic effects. Its primary mechanism of action involves the activation of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) signaling pathways, which helps to reduce hepatic lipid accumulation and oxidative stress. It is currently utilized as a hospital-made preparation and has been evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials for its efficacy in reducing intrahepatic fat content and improving liver enzymes in patients with metabolic-associated fatty liver disease.
