Overview
Jianpi Huatan Tongfu is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formulation, typically administered as a granule, used for the treatment of acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). Its name reflects its therapeutic principles in TCM: strengthening the spleen (Jianpi), resolving phlegm (Huatan), and unblocking the bowels (Tongfu). Clinically, it has been shown to alleviate inflammatory responses by reducing levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-8 (IL-8), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). Additionally, the formulation appears to modulate the gut-lung axis by altering the composition of intestinal flora, specifically increasing the abundance of Firmicutes while decreasing Bacteroidetes and Verrucomicrobia in patients with AECOPD.
