Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Jiaotai Wan is a classic traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula composed of two primary botanical ingredients: *Coptis chinensis* (Huanglian) and *Cinnamomum cassia* (Rougui), typically in a 10:1 ratio. It is traditionally indicated for the treatment of insomnia and depression characterized by the "non-interaction of heart and kidney" (xin shen bu jiao) pattern, where it acts to clear heart fire and warm kidney yang. Modern pharmacological research suggests that Jiaotai Wan exerts its therapeutic effects by modulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, regulating neurotransmitter levels such as serotonin and dopamine, and influencing the gut-brain axis. The formula is currently being evaluated in clinical trials for major depressive disorder and insomnia, often as an adjunctive therapy to conventional treatments like fluoxetine.
