Jiawei Banxia Xiexin Tang (加味半夏泻心汤) is a modified traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula based on the classic prescription Banxia Xiexin Tang. The base formula is designed to harmonize the stomach and intestines, regulate Qi flow, disperse clumping, and relieve focal distention in the gastrointestinal tract. It is commonly used for conditions such as chronic gastritis, gastroduodenal ulcer, functional dyspepsia, and precancerous gastric lesions[1][5][8]. The "Jiawei" (加味) designation indicates that additional herbs are included beyond the original seven ingredients—typically tailored by practitioners according to specific patient symptoms or disease patterns. Modern research suggests that this modified formula can improve clinical symptoms of chronic atrophic gastritis with precancerous changes and may delay progression toward gastric cancer by modulating inflammation and supporting mucosal repair[8]. Mechanistically, it acts through multiple pathways including regulation of gastrointestinal motility (e.g., promoting gastric emptying), reduction of gastric acid secretion, inhibition of pepsin activity, anti-inflammatory effects via TGF-β1/Smad signaling modulation[8], as well as harmonizing cold-heat imbalances per TCM theory.
