Overview

Jiawei Danggui Shaoyao Wan is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula, which is a modified version of the classic prescription Danggui Shaoyao San. The "jiawei" (加味) prefix indicates that additional herbs have been added to the original six-herb formula to enhance or tailor its effects for specific clinical indications. The base formula typically contains Angelica sinensis (Dang Gui), Paeonia lactiflora (Bai Shao), Atractylodes macrocephala (Bai Zhu), Poria cocos (Fu Ling), Alisma orientale (Ze Xie), and Ligusticum chuanxiong (Chuan Xiong). Common additions in Jiawei versions include herbs such as Bupleurum chinense (Chai Hu), Cyperus rotundus (Xiang Fu), Salvia miltiorrhiza (Dan Shen), among others, depending on the targeted symptoms[1][2][6]. The mechanism of action is based on TCM principles—nourishing blood, regulating liver and spleen function, promoting circulation, resolving dampness, and alleviating pain. Modern research suggests it may improve microcirculation and modulate immune responses[2]. It is primarily used for gynecological disorders such as dysmenorrhea, menstrual irregularities due to liver qi stagnation or blood deficiency with dampness accumulation; it has also been applied in hypertension with phlegm-dampness and blood stasis patterns[5], chronic nephritis[2], digestive disorders, and other conditions involving qi stagnation and blood stasis.
