Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Jiawei Gualou Xiebai Guizhi Tang is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal formula. It is a modified version of the classic "Gualou Xiebai Guizhi Tang" (瓜蒌薤白桂枝汤), with "Jiawei" indicating the addition or modification of certain ingredients to tailor the prescription for specific clinical presentations. The base formula typically contains Trichosanthes fruit (Gualou), Allium macrostemon (Xiebai), and Cinnamon twig (Guizhi), among others, and may be adjusted with additional herbs according to patient needs. The mechanism of action in TCM theory involves warming yang, unblocking yang qi, dispersing cold, promoting movement of qi, resolving phlegm-turbidity, and relieving chest pain. It is primarily used for conditions characterized by chest pain due to obstruction by phlegm-turbidity and cold congealing in the chest vessels—most notably stable angina pectoris associated with coronary heart disease[1][2]. Modern research supports its use for improving symptoms related to cardiovascular diseases such as angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, chronic heart failure, as well as some respiratory conditions like chronic cough or asthma when complicated by phlegm retention[1][2][9]. The exact composition can vary depending on clinical presentation but always builds upon the core ingredients of Gualou Xiebai Guizhi Tang. The added herbs ("jiawei") are selected based on individual syndrome differentiation.
