Overview
Jiawei Peony-Glycyrrhiza Decoction is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, also known as Peony-Glycyrrhiza Decoction (PGD), Shaoyao-Gancao-Tang, or Shakuyaku Kanzo-To. It is composed primarily of the roots of Paeonia (peony) and Glycyrrhiza (licorice) and contains active compounds such as albiflorin, paeoniflorin, benzoylpaeoniflorin, liquiritin, and glycyrrhetinic acid. This multi-component herbal formulation is being investigated for the treatment of antipsychotic-induced hyperprolactinemia, a common side effect of certain antipsychotic medications. Its therapeutic effects are believed to stem from its ability to modulate the dopaminergic system, specifically by enhancing dopamine D2 receptor and dopamine transporter expression, and by suppressing prolactin secretion and synthesis, as well as restoring serum progesterone levels.
