Overview
Jiawei Zexie Tang is a modified Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) decoction based on the classic Zexie Tang (Alisma Decoction) originally described in the *Synopsis of Prescriptions of the Golden Chamber* (Jin Gui Yao Lue). It typically consists of *Alisma plantago-aquatica* (Zexie) and *Atractylodes macrocephala* (Baizhu) as core ingredients, with common additions such as *Pinellia ternata*, *Poria cocos*, and *Gastrodia elata*. It is primarily utilized in China for the treatment of vertigo (including Meniere's disease), hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. The formula is designed to 'resolve phlegm and dispel dampness,' which in modern pharmacological terms involves diuretic effects, regulation of inner ear fluid pressure, and lipid-lowering activities. Clinical research suggests it may modulate aquaporin expression and improve metabolic profiles in patients with phlegm-dampness syndromes.
