Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Jidesheng Sheyao Pian (季德胜蛇药片) is a traditional Chinese medicine tablet formulated from a combination of animal and plant ingredients, including Paris polyphylla (重楼), dried toad skin (干蟾皮), centipede (蜈蚣), and Euphorbia humifusa (地锦草)[3][5]. The formula was developed by Ji Desheng, a renowned snakebite doctor, based on six generations of family experience in treating venomous bites. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of venomous snake and insect bites but has also been used for viral hepatitis, herpes zoster (shingles), mumps, encephalitis, burns, dermatitis caused by rove beetles, auricular perichondritis, various inflammatory conditions, and certain tumors[2][5][7][9].\nThe drug acts through multiple mechanisms including anti-venom activity (neutralizing various snake venoms), antiviral effects comparable or superior to acyclovir against herpes viruses[2], anti-inflammatory action reducing edema and pain hypersensitivity[2], hepatoprotective effects[2], antifibrotic properties[2], analgesic and sedative actions[2], as well as antitumor activity demonstrated in some studies. Its mechanism involves clearing heat and toxins according to TCM theory; pharmacologically it exhibits direct cytotoxicity against viruses in vitro and modulates inflammatory responses. Jidesheng Sheyao Pian has low toxicity compared to standard antivirals like acyclovir.\nIt is administered orally or via nasogastric tube if necessary; topical application at bite sites is also practiced for local effect[4]. The product has been recognized as an essential military medicine in China since the 1960s due to its broad-spectrum efficacy against different types of snake venoms without requiring species-specific antivenom serum[9]. It remains under state secret protection regarding its full composition.
