Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Jieyu II (解郁II号) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formula developed primarily for the treatment of depressive disorders, including major depressive disorder (MDD), post-stroke depression (PSD), and perimenopausal depression. The formula is based on the TCM principle of 'soothing the liver and resolving stagnation' (Shugan Jieyu) and typically consists of botanical extracts from herbs such as *Radix Bupleuri* (Chaihu), *Radix Paeoniae Alba* (Baishao), *Rhizoma Cyperi* (Xiangfu), and *Rhizoma Chuanxiong*. Pharmacological studies indicate that Jieyu II exerts antidepressant effects by modulating the monoaminergic system—specifically increasing levels of serotonin (5-HT) and norepinephrine (NE) in the brain—and by regulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Furthermore, it has been shown to promote neuroplasticity by upregulating the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus.
