Overview
Jieyu No. 1 Formula (解郁1号方) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal composition developed primarily by Guang'anmen Hospital of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences for the treatment of depressive disorders. The formula is designed based on the TCM principle of 'soothing the liver and regulating Qi' to address the biological underpinnings of depression, such as neurotransmitter imbalances and chronic neuroinflammation. Pharmacological studies indicate that the formula modulates the levels of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and norepinephrine (NE) in the central nervous system, enhances the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and suppresses pro-inflammatory cytokines like IL-6 and TNF-alpha. It has been evaluated in multiple clinical trials in China, demonstrating efficacy in reducing Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) scores in patients with major depressive disorder and post-stroke depression, often showing a favorable safety profile compared to conventional antidepressants.
