Drug intelligence / Profile preview
JiGuCao is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) primarily derived from the herb *Abrus cantoniensis*. It is a well-established hepatoprotective agent in China, approved for the treatment of acute and chronic hepatitis, cholecystitis, and conditions characterized by liver and gallbladder damp-heat. The drug is manufactured by Conchen Pharmaceutical (a subsidiary of Consun Pharmaceutical Group) and is available in several formulations, including capsules and granules. Pharmacological studies indicate that JiGuCao exerts its effects by modulating liver lipid metabolism and inflammatory responses through the AMPK and PPAR signaling pathways, as well as by restoring the gut-liver axis and altering gut microbiota composition (e.g., increasing *Lactobacillus* abundance). It has also shown potential in preclinical models for the treatment of metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) and chronic hepatitis B (CHB).
