Overview

Jinhuang Ointment is a traditional Chinese herbal topical formulation composed of ten commonly used herbs, including Da Huang (Rheum palmatum), Huang Bai (Phellodendron amurense), Jiang Huang (Curcuma longa), Bai Zhi (Angelica dahurica), Tian Nan Xing (Arisaema erubescens), Chen Pi (Citrus reticulata peel), Cang Zhu (Atractylodes lancea), Hou Po (Magnolia officinalis bark), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhiza uralensis root), and Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthes kirilowii root)[4]. It is widely used in China for the external treatment of various skin inflammatory diseases, including boils, abscesses, carbuncles, mastitis, contact dermatitis, herpes zoster, erysipelas, paronychia, trauma-related swellings and injuries with stagnation of fluids and blood[1][2][3][4][9][10]. The ointment acts through multiple mechanisms—primarily by modulating inflammatory responses and immune cell infiltration. Pharmacological studies suggest that its active components target pathways such as Toll-like receptors and IL-17 signaling to reduce inflammation. It may regulate skin cell metabolism and improve the local immune microenvironment by acting on targets like CXCL8/IL8, ESR1, IL1β, MMP1/3[1]. Clinically it has shown efficacy in reducing swelling/redness/exudation time in acute paronychia[2], improving wound healing in abscesses or chronic ulcers[3], alleviating symptoms of gouty arthritis when combined with other therapies[5], and treating sports injuries or trauma-related swelling without heat/redness[4].
