Overview

Jiu-Wei-Xi-Feng granules is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulation developed by Jiangsu Kanion Pharmaceutical and clinically evaluated by the First Teaching Hospital of Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is approved in China for the treatment of mild to moderate tic disorders (including Tourette syndrome) in children, specifically those presenting with the TCM syndrome pattern of kidney-yin deficiency and internal liver-wind stirring. The original formulation consists of nine ingredients: Gastrodia elata, Rehmannia root, Gentiana scabra, Tortoise shell, Uncaria rhynchophylla, Dragon bone (Os Draconis / Longgu), Bombyx batryticatus (Stiff silkworm), Celadonite, and Pinellia ternata. Due to conservation and cost concerns regarding Dragon bone, a modified formulation replacing Dragon bone with Oyster shell (Ostreae Concha / Muli) has been developed and shown to be clinically equivalent.
