Overview

Jiuganqing is a Chinese patent medicine developed by the Jilin University Science and Technology Center, specifically indicated for the treatment of alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD) and alcoholic hepatitis. It is a multi-herb formulation typically composed of extracts from *Pueraria lobata* (Kudzu root), *Hovenia dulcis*, and *Salvia miltiorrhiza*. The drug exerts hepatoprotective effects by mitigating alcohol-induced oxidative stress, inhibiting lipid peroxidation, and reducing the accumulation of triglycerides in the liver. Mechanistically, Jiuganqing has been shown to modulate the TGF-beta1/Smad signaling pathway, thereby inhibiting the activation of hepatic stellate cells and preventing liver fibrosis. It also appears to suppress pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-alpha and IL-6 by inhibiting the NF-kappaB pathway. Primarily utilized in China, it is often administered as an oral capsule or granule to patients suffering from chronic alcohol-induced liver injury.
