Overview
Jiuwei Qingzhi Ointment is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formulation developed by the Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine for the treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The name 'Jiuwei' (nine flavors) indicates that the formulation is composed of nine herbal ingredients. In TCM theory, the ointment is designed to strengthen the spleen, clear heat, promote diuresis, and remove turbidity, addressing the metabolic imbalances and 'damp-heat' patterns associated with fatty liver conditions. It is typically prepared as an internal paste (Gao Fang), a concentrated herbal form used for the management of chronic metabolic disorders. The formulation is currently being evaluated in clinical trials to assess its efficacy in reducing hepatic fat and improving liver function in patients with NASH.
