Overview
JNJ-10229570 is a small molecule antagonist of the melanocortin-5 receptor (MC5R) that was developed for the topical treatment of acne vulgaris. The melanocortin-5 receptor is expressed in human sebaceous glands and is a key regulator of sebogenesis (sebum production). By antagonizing this receptor, JNJ-10229570 aims to reduce the excessive sebum production that contributes to the formation of acne lesions. The compound was originally developed by Janssen Pharmaceutical and was subsequently licensed to Valeant Pharmaceuticals (now Bausch Health) for further clinical development. It reached Phase 2 clinical trials, where its safety and efficacy were evaluated in patients with acne, but development was ultimately discontinued.
