JNS020QD is a once-daily transdermal matrix patch formulation of fentanyl, a potent small molecule opioid analgesic. Developed by Janssen Pharmaceutical K.K., it is indicated for the relief of moderate to severe cancer pain and chronic non-cancer pain in opioid-tolerant patients. Fentanyl functions as a selective agonist of the mu-type opioid receptor in the central nervous system, inhibiting ascending pain pathways and increasing the pain threshold. This 1-day formulation is designed to be replaced every 24 hours, providing an alternative to the traditional 3-day fentanyl patches (such as JNS005) by allowing for more frequent dose adjustments and potentially more stable plasma levels in certain patient populations. It was approved in Japan in 2010 for cancer pain and subsequently for chronic non-cancer pain.
